Meet the magical frog

"Kambô circulates in the heart…it makes the heart move accurately, so that things flow, bringing good things to the person…..."

Kambo is the most popular name given to the intelligent, powerful and loving spirit that has gifted humanity a potent healing secretion.  The scientific name for this magical frog that inhabits the Amazon basin is Phyllomedusa bicolor and others will know it as the ‘Giant Monkey Frog’.

The Kambo frog produces a secretion that researchers have identified as containing a multitude of bioactive peptides, which appear to be able to arouse the human body’s natural intelligence into healing and balancing. The secretion from Kambo is known to be poisonous to the natural predators of the frog but for human beings the peptides are able to cause stimulation of the major organs of elimination. This results in a deeply detoxifying ‘purge’ whilst simultaneously boosting the immune system. Kambo compels us to release what is no longer serving us, physically, emotionally and energetically.

Kambo is a soul medicine. It works multi-dimensionally.  For the Indigenous tribal users of Kambo the energetic potency of the secretion is sought to eliminate Panema or heavy energy. This energy is often felt when we are feeling stuck or blocked in any area of our life. This may be experienced as not feeling that things are in flow, or we may feel unlucky as if there is a dark cloud hanging over our heads.

The spirit of the frog is able to scan and then permeate the deepest subtle layers of our energetic bodies – excavating, clearing and shifting as it goes along. Kambo spirit is intelligent and works with your intention, which is why it is important to deeply reflect on where you wish to initiate change in your being.

As it is known for its powerful ability to help people shift stagnant energy patterns, people often feel the call to Kambo in order to move forward and towards their desired goals.

Clients have observed the following benefits:

  • More energy, focus, stamina and drive

  • Improved symptoms of depression and low mood

  • Stronger immune system – quicker healing from infections and viruses

  • Support in managing and releasing addictions

  • Release from negative energetic intrusions and interference

  • Trauma and emotional release

  • Feeling more motivated, confident and lighter in spirit

  • More emotional intelligence and heart centred consciousness

  • Better management of self-sabotage and compulsive behaviours

  • Insight and clarity into personal issues

  • Feelings of serenity, peacefulness and a more playful attitude to life

  • Increased libido

  • Feeling of being ‘reborn’ with renewed optimism

The indigenous tribes have been using the secretion for use against snakebites, malaria, infertility, fevers, infections, to reduce pain and prepare the body and mind for hunting for thousands of years.

Due to Kambo’s unique synergistic cocktail of active bio peptides, researchers suggest that the secretion acts as an anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antimicrobial and anaesthetic. It has the potential to support the treatment of:

  • Depression

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • Alzheimer’s disease

  • Chronic Fatigue syndrome

  • Chronic Pain

  • Cancer

  • Rheumatism

  • Arthritis

  • Hepatitis

  • Diabetes

  • HIV

  • Addictions

The above list is not exhaustive and research is on going.  You can read more about the research here.

How Kambo is used

Prior to the ceremony

We will usually have a short Skype or telephone call to understand what your motivations are for working with Kambo as well as assessing your suitability.  There will be a detailed questionnaire to complete as well as form to sign.

If you are deemed suitable to work with the medicine I ask that you prepare for the ceremony in two key ways to get the best results:

  • Working on your intention and desired outcome

  • Preparing your body by reducing processed foods and increasing fresh living foods

I provide more guidance on the preparation activities during our initial chat.

Like most shamanic healing, you get as much out of Kambo as you put in. In other words, your preparation and commitment to your intention are as equally important as the ceremony itself.

During the ceremony

Whether in a group or personal session, sacred space is opened. Other Amazonian natural herbs may be used such as herbal snuff or eye drops. These help support the opening of energetic channels. You will be drinking large amounts of water as we prepare to go into receiving the Kambo.

During the session you will receive small burns on your skin known as ‘gates’. The secretion is then applied to the gates in a careful and considered manner.  The amount of gates received is individual.  You will be encouraged to go into the silence of your heart and keep in mind your intention.

Kambo goes straight into the lymphatic system via the gates and usually after several minutes the client will likely observe the following:

  • Feeling of increased blood flow to the head

  • Throbbing sensation in body

  • Increase heart beat

  • Increased perspiration

  • Nausea followed by the need to vomit

  • Swelling of lips and or face (Frog face)

These are all really good signs that Kambo is stimulating the body into releasing toxins through our channels of elimination.  Kambo helps to detoxify the body of toxins through the major organs of elimination which include:

  • Colon

  • Kidney

  • Liver

  • Skin

Most of these toxins will be dumped into the water in the stomach and released through purging. Some people may experience sweating (toxins released through the skin) and potentially the need to have a bowel movement. The liquid that is released from the stomach can be varied in colour and will contain bile from the liver - our major organ of detoxification. It usually does not contain any food, as client will have been fasting for at least 8 hours before.

Some clients may purge energetically by shaking, moaning or crying due to the release of toxic suppressed emotions and trauma.

After the purge has completed it will take between 30-45 minutes to feel more like our usual selves. Clients are made to feel comfortable and encouraged to lie down and relax  - often snuggled in a blanket. This is often a time when insights may emerge.  Despite what some may find as unappealing in terms of the purge and intensity of the experience, the perceived benefits appear to outweigh this.

Kambo is safe however there are some contraindications. In the scenarios below Kambo should be avoided.

  • Heart disease related issues and bypass surgery

  • Stroke or blood clotting

  • Severe Ashma or Bronchitis

  • Severe blood pressure issues (high or low)

  • Serious mental health conditions

  • Epilepsy

  • Recovering from a major surgical procedure

  • Within a month of receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy

  • Severe drug or alcohol dependency

  • Addison’s disease

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

There are also contraindications for some pharmaceutical drugs and lifestyle choices so it is essential that that if you are using any drugs at all they are disclosed as part of the pre-screening questionnaire.

How many treatments do I need?

This really depends on the individual. Clients have made giant leaps in progress after one session; others have benefits by having a number of sessions within a fixed time period such as a month. Some clients who wish to go deeper and expedite results and choose to have 3 sessions within the lunar cycle.  Whilst others choose to have 3 sessions over one week. I will discount sessions when people are seeking 3 or more sessions.

Is it suitable for all ages?

Although in tribal settings in the jungle Kambo is used on children and elderly members of the tribe, I prefer to work with mature individuals who are at least 25 years old and no older than 60 years old.  Exceptions to this are considered on an individual basis.

What’s the difference between a personal and group ceremony?

A personal ceremony is usually carried out in the client’s home which many clients report more favourable, especially if it’s the first time.  This means that we can work at a very individual level and providing the safe space for the client to process any emotional trauma that is released. Clients usually find recovering in their own homes more comfortable as they have access to their amenities.

In a group session there is a more communal or tribal feeling. The advantage is that the price will be slightly cheaper; the disadvantage is that the treatment will be less personalised. For some clients the group session is well suited for their healing needs especially where the support of the tribe is valued.

Are there any side effects?

Due to the burning of the upper epidermis of the skin, it is very likely that gates will leave scars. Some clients see the scars as testament of their bravery and as a subtle reminder of what they have released. Where scarring is undesirable I will work with the client to ensure they are as discreet as possible. I use Aloe Vera or Dragons Blood (a plant resin) to seal the gates. Some people choose to allow them to heal naturally.

During the session clients may experience swelling of the face which we affectionately call ‘frog face’. For some clients the swelling may take 1-3 days to fully go down. This is the exception rather than the norm. Most clients are recovered within a few hours.

Is the Kambo frog harmed in gathering the secretion?

No. Kambo has been used for thousands of years by the tribes of the Amazon. Their culture is respectful of all living creatures. After the secretion is collected the frog is returned to its natural habitat with an identification marker so that other shamans know that it has offered its secretion.

Is it a hallucinogenic?

No. There are other frog secretions that are but Kambo is not one of them.  The experience can be intense but not for long.

Can Kambo help with addictions?

Kambo can be very supportive in freedom from addictions if the right mind set and conditions are established.  Please contact me for more information.

Is there any scientific research on Kambo?

This is an interesting paper on one of the peptides being used in relation to Cancer:

What are bioactive peptides and who discovered them?

A scientist called Vittorio Erspamer was responsible for identifying the peptides in Kambo in the 1980s.  He also discovered Serotonin and was nominated for the Nobel Prize.  The bioactive peptides are suggested by Erspamer to be able to bind with receptor sites within the human brain triggering chemical reactions in the body.  Esparmer suggested that the secretion from Kambo was unmatched from any other amphibian and even suggested it was a ‘fantastic cocktail’.

To date, researchers have found nine bio- active peptides that have a potent effect on the gastrointestinal muscles, gastric and pancreatic secretions, blood circulation, and on the stimulation of the adrenal cortex and pituitary gland.
